What Causes Chronic Cough After Surgical Removal Of Goiters?
I just had two large goiters surgically removed--they had been putting pressure on my windpipe to the extent that it had been pushed out of place. Before the surgery, I was having violent coughing fits--after the surgery, to my dismay, I am still having coughing spells, 12 days after the surgery was done. Is this normal, what is the cause of the coughing, and how long should I expect it to continue?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
* As per my surgical experience the post operative chronic cough may be related to:
- Anesthesia induced effect over respiratory tract
- Secondary respiratory tract infection
- Side effect of certain medications
In our clinic, I recommend tincture Benzoin inhalation with peppermint gargles along with needed antibiotic for best recovery.
Hope I have answered your query.
