What Causes Chronic Cough Along With Fever And Fatigue?

I have a recurrent problem starting March 2017. I start with a slight discomfort in sinuses and have a nagging cough. There is some mucus but not a lot and the cough is nonproductive. I then have an elevated temperature, usually from 99.6 to 101.9. I become extremely fatigued with no desire or energy to do anything. This lasts until I finally go to a doctor who prescribes antibiotics, steroids and sometimes a cough suppressant. I do get better. When I asked the most recent physician for an anti fungal type medication I got better quicker and felt better for much longer. It recurs about every 6 weeks. In March my husband and I traveled to Ecuador and Peru. When in Peru, I needed oxygen due to altitude sickness. I believe the Oxygen tank was contaminated because when I woke the next morning the inside of my mouth was black with a fuzz (similar to an orange that has become moldy). I have not had these symptoms prior to our trip or remain ill for so long.

Hello,

1. After going through your symptoms of cough/congestion, either there is the possibility of seasonal allergy, chronic bronchitis, or pneumonia as such you should see a Chest Specialist for relevant physical examination and investigation like:
- Hb%, WBC for eosinophilia.
- X-ray chest for TB, Pneumonia.
- If other investigations are normal, HIV test [as routine]
As mainly chest symptoms are there, thus this is an indication for immediate chest X-ray. .
- As you are suffering from the sinus problem for the last 4 days [upper respiratory problem thus consultation with an ENT physician is essential.

CT scan of the sinuses can help confirm the diagnosis,

iii. The choice of antibiotic will vary from doctor to doctor, and from locality to locality, till then- maintain good oral hygiene, rinse your mouth after every meal, avoid smoking, tobacco chewing.

- Take mainly soft diet - rice, chapati, or phulka, with nonspicy vegetables.
- Avoid fried foods like wada, samosa, dosa, pakodas, papad, namkeen and potato chips, avoid hotel food.
- Do not take any cold drinks, cold water, ice cream, chilled food from the refrigerator.
- Avoid sour fruits like citrus fruits, grapes, take sweet fruits- bananas, papaya
- Steam Inhalation and warm salt water gargles.
- Cover the mouth while coughing (using hand or handkerchief) to prevent the spread of infection to other family members.
