What Causes Chronic Cough Along With Pain And Swelling In The Tonsils?

hello? I have had a cough for almost 3 months that is usually productive but sometimes dry. also for the past month now, i have had painfully swollen tonsils, swollen areas on the roof of my pharynx, sore throat, difficulty swallowing, but tests indicate it is not strep throat. i don t have a fever, aches, or chest pain. my doctor only gave me some antihistamines but nothing is helping. i may be getting worse.

Hi,

Based on your description, it appears that you could be having a chronic infection of the pharynx.

Kindly get a throat swab done along with culture and sensitivity testing. Take a course of appropriate antibiotics along with antihistamine medication.

Do take the following supportive measures along with the medications.

1. Salt water gargling with warm water thrice daily.
2. Steam inhalation twice daily.
3. Use decongestant syrup and medicated lozenges when necessary.
4. Avoid intake of cold items like ice-cream and cool drinks.

Gradually, you should be able to overcome the problem and get better.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ashakiran S, General & Family Physician
