What Causes Chronic Cough And Pain In The Pelvis?

I have had a hacking chronic cough for the last week which makes it difficult to sleep even while propped up. Yesterday, I began getting sharp stabbing pains in my lower left pelvic area every time I would start coughing. Today, the sharp stabbing pain has increased and I feel like I am about to rupture something inside of me every time I cough.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I have reviewed your query in detail and here is my advice.

Possibility of a hernia needs to be ruled out. A persistent cough increases intra-abdominal pressure which can lead to herniation of viscera through weak spots in the abdominal/inguinal area. Physical examination can confirm the diagnosis. Please be advised to follow up with your primary provider for necessary work-up.
Meanwhile, you can take over the counter cough syrup containing dextromethorphan to relieve intense cough.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Lekshmi Rita Venugopal,
