What Causes Chronic Cough, Nasal Congestion And Upper Chest Pain?

I'm debating whether to go to the doctor or not. I feel silly bothering them if it's nothing, but I have had a bad cough for around three days, runny nose, upper chest pain, and slight ear pain. I took my temperature and its in the normal range (98.1), however it's usually in the 96-97 range. Any help you can provide would be great. Thanks!

Hi,

As per your complain the symptoms of bad cough for around three days, runny nose, upper chest pain, and slight ear pain are appearing consistent with Upper Respiratory tract infection, also known as Common Cold. Ear ache is due to infection in ears that occurs commonly along with cold due to communication between ear and throat via Eustachian tube.

As of now you can start with supportive treatment to relieve the symptoms like:

1. Gargle with a warm saline solution and do steam inhalations..Use a cool mist vapourizer in your room.

2. Take a combination of decongestant like Phenylephrine, mucolytics like Ambroxol and anti allergic levocetrizine and another combination of Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen.

3. Take cough suppressant containing Dextromethorphan and cough suppressant containing Gueifenesin.

4. Avoid spicy and chilled foods.

5. Chew a Vitamin C pellet to boost up immunity.

6. Drink plenty of water and other warm fluids to maintain hydration.

7. Take appropriate rest and avoid exertion.

Hopefully the symptoms will resolve within a week and if it worsen consult a General Physician and get evaluated.

Hope this information helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks and regards,
Dr. Honey Nandwani Arora.
