What Causes Chronic Cough While On Metoprolol, Clopidogrel And Atorvastatin?

My husband has had a bad dry cough for two weeks now and his doctor s pa has put him on cough suppresent (Benzonatate 100 mg) 4 x/day. He also takes metoprolol, Clopidogrel, Atorvastatin. Do any of these meds cause him to cough like he has been doing? He has gone through 2 bottles of cough syrup and many cough drops. What are your thoughts? Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

A bad dry cough of your husband while on Clopidogrel is due to stomach problems aggravated by Clopidogrel use. I think he might be having gastritis or ulcer or acid reflux.

Please follow up with a gastroenterologist, run upper endoscopy to check it out.

Give antacids to stabilize stomach pH.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
