What Causes Chronic Cough While On Medication For Hypertension?

I have a history of hypertension. I have recently started a medication that keeps my blood pressure within normal range; however, I have developed a chronic cough with clear mostly thin mucus, scratchy dry throat, and have started having heartburn/indigestion almost 2-3 times a week, if not more. I do smoke , and am 50 years old. Could this be all from one ailment or a combination of things? I see that I have to have a freakin credit card for this. If I had any income, I'd go to the doctors office.

Some of anti-hypertensive medicines such as enalapril or captopril cause chronic cough as a side effect. But this will not continue life-long. This cough will resolve after some time once you get accustom to medicine. Chronic cough and heartburn might be due to smoking.
Advice

1.     Continue anti-hypertensive as suggested
2.     Levocetirizine 5 mg daily per oral if cough is intolerable
3.     Omeprazole 20 mg per oral empty stomach for 15 days
4.     Regular exercise at least 30 minutes for 5 days in a week. The best types of exercises for lowering BP are walking, jogging, cycling, swimming or dancing
5.     Eating a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products and skimps on saturated fat and cholesterol
6.     Consume less salt
7.     Avoid smoking, alcohol, coffee, spicy food and caffeinated beverages
8.     Lose extra weight if you are overweight and keep your body mass index between 19 and 25. BMI is calculated by formula BMI = Weight in Kilograms / (height in meters x height in meters)
9.     Measure your BP regularly and be in touch with your doctor
10.     Avoid eating 3 hours before lying down
11.     Do not take heavy meal at a time. Divide your meal into smaller parts
12.     Raise the head of your bed
I hope this information will help you. I will be happy if you ask another question
