What Causes Chronic Cough While Suffering From Asthma?

My 3yr old grandson was previously diagnosed with asthma. However after several specialists visit, a pediatric pulmonologist said his chronic cough was not normal and they have scheduled a ct and a bronchology test that would scrape mucous from his throat and lungs. What would they be looking for.

Hello,

Some possibilities are:

-Foreign body(part of peanut or small toy) that he swallowed and got lodged in his airway

-Stomach contents that repeatedly come out of the stomach and reflux into the oesophagus and then spill into the throat (recurrent aspiration)
-tuberculosis.

-enlargement of lymph nodes in the middle of the chest.

-a blood vessel in the chest that is wrapped around part of the respiratory tract (such as trachea or larynx) abnormally.

-a portion of one of the lungs that has collapsed.

I think the lung specialist has good plans to find out the cause of your grandson's cough.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Arnold Zedd, Pediatrician
