What Causes Chronic Cough While Suffering From Tonsillitis?

My son has tonsillitis & has been on antibiotics for 2 days. He has developed a very deep cough & 3 doses of cough medicine hasn t even tough it, the cough has gotten worse. No fever, just chills & tired. Should I take him to the ER? Could he have pneumonia?

Hi,

Yes, deep cough, chills and tiredness can be symptoms of a bronchopneumonia or pneumonia. In my opinion,you should take him to ER because his symptoms has gotten worse even under antibiotics.

It is necessary to do a chest X-Ray and some blood tests like a complete blood count and arterial blood gases to see if your son has only an upper respiratory tract infection or it is pneumonia.

Pneumonia is a more serious infection that has different treatment and has longer treatment time.
