What Causes Chronic Cough?

I have had a cough on off for a couple of weeks. I feel fine and can work normally during the daytime. I even do my usual mile swim every day with no problem. But, at night, I cough a lot. I do get some phlegm up. Two days ago, I came down with an ear ache. I went to my ENT doctor and she determined I had a mild sinus infection and prescribed amoxycillin, Amox/K Clav 875-125mg to be taken twice a day. I have taken 2 of them and actually took one more in the middle of the night just now. When I lie down to try to sleep, I have coughing spells. When I am up and not breathing so deeply, I don t cough. I sleep regularly with a CPAP (bi-pap) machine. My ear ache has improved. What could this be? I ve slept quite well, in spite of this, for the last two weeks, but tonight, I have had more severe coughing when I try to go to sleep. I have been sleeping elevated in a recliner.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Causes of nocturnal cough are Gerd, dry air, asthma, sinusitis, deficiency of iron, medication like ace inhibitors, heart disease, and it can also be obstructive sleep apnea. Treatment for OSA include trimming of softpalate, uvula, removing tonsils, repositioning of some muscles to widen airway. Chronic cough means cough lasts more than or equal to 8 weeks.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pavani
