What Causes Chronic Cough?

I have had a cough now for a few years that has gotten worse, I do go to doctors but the only thing that has been ruled out was from an emergency room visit a few weeks ago is that I do not have pneumonia. I have been given prescriptions for cough medicine and antibiotics, From the past 3 weeks I saw 3 primary doctors, 1 pulmonary and 1 ear nose, throat doctor with no results and no answer as to what is wrong.

Hello,

Cough is a very common symptom and can be very devastating to the patient when it is so prolonged. If you have had chest X-ray, spirometry, ECG, heart ultrasound, and other examinations of the heart and lungs and all come back normal then it rules out problems with these organs.

Chronic cough can happen with allergies and also with stomach acid reflux. You may benefit from using some medications for allergy like cetirizine or loratadine at night and also you may try some omeprazole to help with the acid reflux for 2-3 weeks and see if there is any improvement.

If no improvement is noticed and all the examinations come out normal then a psychogenic cough can be the case and this means that there is no structural problem but mostly psychogenic reasons.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
