What Causes Chronic Diarrhea Despite Taking Kaopectate In An Elderly Person?

I have had diarrhea for six weeks. It started with stool being smaller diameter. The first week I was going 20 times a day and was prescribed kaopectate and levsin so.125. After lessening to 4 or 5 movements it is still loose and very odorous. I have gas that smells and stomach discomfort. My mother had colon cancer and I have never had a colonostomy. I am a 69 year old male and fifty pounds overweight. I have an enlarged prostrate and do not exercise enough.

Anesthesiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Chronic diarrhea may be due to the following causes:
1) Celiac disease
2) Inflammatory bowel disease
3) Irritable bowel syndrome
4) Microscopic colitis
5) Colon cancer

As you still have loose stools and 4-5 bowel movement per day, you may need to undergo a colonoscopy examination to rule out any cancer colon. Please do consult a medical gastroenterologist for further evaluation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
