What Causes Chronic Diarrhea?

Experiencing chronic, mostly soft bowel movements lasting hours to days and reoccurring more and more frequently... lastly-every 2-3 days. Have been keeping a food diet for the last 2 months with no obvious culprits seen. I am 57 years old with a 30 year history of IBS. NO associated pain, nausea, vomiting or weight loss. Treating with OTC anti-diarrheals, patience.

You are mentioning irritable bowel syndrome which is mainly related to stress related functional bowel problem. For that Lubiprostone like specific medication can be given. Avoid stress and medication with behavioral counselling useful for that. Stool culture also advisable. If needed colonoscopy done to exclude any organic cause if present. Hyperthyroidism, chronic illness also should be checked. Hope this will help you. Consult gastroenterologist for examination
