What Causes Chronic Dull Pain In The Coccyx?

Hello. I m a 19 year old female. 5 5 in height and 200 pounds in weight. Since December of 2014 I ve had tailbone pain. At first I had a cyst/ abscess which I found by accident by pressing straight down my lumbar region down through the center of my butt. The sinus area release a yellowish- white fluid with brownish red fluid which I assumed to be blood. It smelled awful. I was able to push the rest of it out with my fingers and the pain went away. Then around January the pain came back. I notice that when I flex my PC muscles like I m trying to stop my flow of urine my tailbone hurts. On a scale of 1-10 it can be around a 5, when I sit down it becomes a 7, and as I stand up it becomes a complete 9. As bad as it may seem my boyfriend and I have anal sex at least once a month. He is a little worried that he may have hurt me. Though I don t feel pain when we have anal sex he wanted me to see if something was wrong. I have been to my doctors office about it and she only prescribed pain medications. She tried to see if I had another abscess/ cyst and didn t fin anything she then had me take an X-ray and everything showed up fine. I ve been to her twice with the same symptoms and she only prescribes medications. I do not want to be dependent on meds my entire life since that can destroy my liver. Throughout the day my pain goes from dull and annoying to painful like when I sleep. I have done a hot/ cold compress and sitz baths but nothing has really helped. I m desperate to cure this. Please help. Do you know what can possibly help? Please?

Anesthesiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Pain in the tailbone is called coccydynia. Pain continuing for 3-6 months is called chronic coccydynia. The following are few treatment options which are oral pain medication, ganglion impar sympathetic nerve blocks, sacrococcygeal joint injections, epidural steroid injections, ischial bursa injections, nerve ablation techniques or if all the above fail, coccygectomy or removal of coccyx.

Please do consult an anesthesiologist or a pain medicine expert and have those injections. That will improve your pain and quality of life significantly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
