What Causes Chronic Falling Asleep Of My Hands

hands have been falling asleep for 6yrs now in the begging wasn't too bad dr gave me wrist splints to sleep in been doing that ever since and they are only getting worse they are no longer helping i wake several times a night and theyare not only asleep but throbing and hurting so bad I have to cry What is wrong with me??
