What Causes Chronic Gastritis?

I am a 36 year old female. I have gastritis problem for the past 10 years. When I go to the doctor and take medicines it reduces. Otherwise it persists. I took an endoscopy 5yrs back. Everything was normal. What will happen to me? Will this lead to any cancer?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
One of the common causes for gastritis of longer duration could be 'H.pylori' infection. Unless you eradicate the organism from the stomach, the symptoms would not get relieved completely with use of any form of medication.
Since endoscopy was done 5 years back, it would be advisable for you to undergo it once again now to look for the mucosal status and undertake a biopsy to look for H.pylori infection.
In case H.pylori is positive, you need to take a course of treatment which constitutes 3 drugs to eradicate the organism.
If left alone, chronic gastritis could land you in complications like erosive gastritis, gastric mucosal bleeding, gastric mucosal atrophy and rarely gastric carcinoma.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
