What Causes Chronic Hiccups In A Toddler?

My three year old son has never ending hiccups they get worse the more relaxed he is, to the point of struggling to breath before sleeping. Then while asleep, he gets a few, and they stop. When stressed, they silence completely. When engaged or excited, they get worse. He has had ear infections and tubes, but doctor checked his ears and found no sign of nerve irritants in there and the tubes fell out recently. He is in perfect health otherwise. The hiccups seem to be always there just vary in speed.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

1. Since you have mentioned that the child is 3 year old, certain factors have to be excluded at his age are:
i. Is he swallowing too much air [eating large meals, drinking carbonated beverages]?
ii. Any sort of emotional stress [parental/marital disharmony]?

PS. Excitement is present in history, this could be an aggravating factor since any of the above factors can cause irritation to the diaphragm.

2. Since you have taken an ENT opinion, make sure to exclude any systemic cause of the same [if any] by consulting a Pediatrician to look out for any disorders of the stomach, esophagus [reflux disease] or bowel disease, till then:
- try giving him smaller but more frequent meals [avoid overfeeding].
- make sure to feed him in an upright position.
-try gripe water

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
