What Causes Chronic Insomnia While Having Arthritis And Fibromyalgia?

I have had chronic insomnia now for at least twelve plus years. Problems falling asleep (typically 2:00 - 3:00 a.m.) and problems staying asleep. I have had three sleep apnea tests and they have shown nothing abnormal.I have spinal stenosis, arthritis from neck to toes and fibromyalgia as the chronic health problems that cause pain. All of these for over 20 plus years, the fibro for much longer. I am 63. I have been on many of the older sleep medications and the ones that literally knocked me out made me feel so out of it the next day that I cannot take them. As far as I know my pain management Dr. has tried me on all of the newer ones. The only one that had consistently worked was Edluar. It no longer does. It helps me to fall asleep but I am awake within 60-90 minutes.I have gone through several sleep clinics. Keep consistent bed & wake times. Blacked out & cool room. No electronics nor tv.Thank you.

Hi,

Well, insomnia may be difficult to treat, but there are some methods which can be used.

Treatment options include behavior and lifestyle changes, medicines, and complementary medicines.

You need to change your dietary habits and these include changing your sleep area or schedule, watching what and when you eat and drink, and being more active.

It's also important to keep regular bedtimes and wake times-7 days a week-and to try to avoid taking naps during the day.

Prescription sleep medicines amy also help and include diazepam and similar medications.Melatonin is supplement which may be of help as well. In severe cases special testing is needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
