What Causes Chronic Itching All Over The Body?

I started itching all over my body about 1 week ago during the day . The itching gets worse at night and tends to be my stomach, back, both arms and back of head so I m not getting much sleep. I don t have any rashes, I m eating the same foods and using the same products. I m really concerned. I m a nurse so I m freaking myself out trying to figure out what s going on. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Kindly get your liver enzymes checked. Especially if bilirubin is in excess then it can cause pruritis and generalized itching.

If there is no history of allergy to anything then also we can think of giving you antihistaminics once to find out your response to it.

Any antihistaminics like cetirizine, levocetirizine, chlorpromazine, etcetera can be taken for 3 to 5 days. If the itching reduces then it might be due to allergy only.

If your liver enzymes are elevated then we need to investigate you for jaundice.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Archana
