What Causes Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease?

How did I get COPD when I ve never been a smoker. When I first 6 months I worked for the government they allowed smokers to be in the same area as us non smokers... I was always sick... so I put in for another job where there was no smoking allowed except outside. Could that be a reason for me to have it now?
