What Causes Chronic Pain And Swelling In The Knee?
My 48 year old wife, very fit and active, fell 4 days ago and hurt her knee. She is having pain and swelling on the inner and front part of the knee. If you gently rub the upper half of the patella there is a crackling feeling. She walks without limping but does have significant pain when doing more physical activities .
If there are abnormal sounds, then she may need to rule out a fracture involving the knee joint.
This would require an x ray.
If there is no fracture present and the pain is due to soft tissue injury only then treatment would involve : (1) rest and protection of the joint from further injury
The period of rest can vary but in general, it should be at least 2 weeks, in some cases, up the 6 weeks is needed
(2)ice therapy as well. Ice compression bandage can be applied 2 to 3 times a day for 15 to 25 minutes
(3)if there is any swelling then a compression bandage and elevation of the leg would be helpful
