What Causes Chronic Pain In Sternum Radiating To The Back?

I have severe attacks in the sternum area. The pain starts there, (I am always in pain), then it gets worse and goes to both sides and back. It s worse than labor pains! I have had bad constipation also. I have been to ER twice, followed up with my Dr. My blood work came back pristine , that s what the ER Dr. said. My Monocyte level was 51, higher than it should be. My Dr. Wasn t concerned because my WBC was not high. My Dr. prescribed an antacid, 2 times a day, and Myralax. Even with that I do not have a big enough bowel movement. I do not have insurance, so I feel that I am not taken seriously. I have attacks once a month, they last about an hour. The pain is constant tho.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have chronic pain in sternum radiating to the back . Well the symptoms you mention in query can occur due to certain reasons like trapezius trigger point , muscle spasm , disc problem or working in same posture for long time . The symptoms can also occur due to kidney stone , gall bladder problem or angina . I would suggest you to apply warm compresses to back several times a day , take proper rest , change your posture after after every few minute while working and take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain . Consult orthopedic surgeon if condition doesn't get better . Doctor may order CT scan , MRI or x-ray . Doctor may recommend particular stretching exercises , physical therapy , muscle relaxant or anti inflammatory . Doctor may also refer you to cardiologist for acid reflux problem or gastroenterologist for gallstone .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
