What Causes Chronic Pain In The Hips?

Hello. I have had chronic hip pain (right hip for almost 24 years now. I have had multiple falling injuries on it throughout my military career. For 24 years, I ve had a clicking, grinding, and popping in the joint. for the last 5 years, I have had a catch, or a certain position that it seems to lock and will not go any farther in a certain direction without extreme pain. X-rays reveal nothing. My question is: Will an MRI reveal what is going on and can it tell how old the injury is? As stated; this began after 3 injuries that happened between 1992 and 1994.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Sorry to hear about your issue and pity about not diagnosed till now.

I am suspicious about avascular necrosis of head of the femur. In your case I strongly recommend to get an MRI of the hip joint as soon as possible and can consult with the report.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel
