Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had a smoke smell for about a week. It s not the first time this has happened. It comes and goes. I m a non smoker and smell it when there is no one around as well. Today I blew my nose and I had small black streaks in my otherwise clear mucous.
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have chronic sense of smelling smoke which is known as Phantosmia which occurs mainly due to olfactory hallucinations. There can be many reasons for this condition like acid reflux , poor oral hygiene , oral infection like gingivitis , sinusitis , nervous system dysfunction and bowel obstruction. Take a single tablet of desvenlafaxine daily and your symptoms will resolve in one month. I would suggest you to consult gastroenterologist for proper examination and diagnosis and then start treatment accordingly if your symptoms keeps on persisting. Doctor may order endoscopy or can go for barium swallow study. Doctor may refer you to oral pathologist or ENT specialist . For now maintain proper oral hygiene. Take diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables. drink plenty of water along with that take green tea 2-3 times a day.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
