What Causes Clicking Noise Every Time After Turning Head?

My 10 year old son began complaining with a stiff neck 4 days ago. Now it is making a clicking noise every time he turns his head. He does not have a fever and mild complaints of pain from the stiffness. I thought maybe he slept wrong at first. Is this anything to worry about. I have tried exercise and NSAIDS with no relief. He does play sports.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

These cracking sounds is called as crepitus. If neck cracking or grinding is accompanied by pain, stiffness, or other concerning symptoms, it may indicate an underlying medical condition such as arthritis or degenerative disc changes. Although arthritis and degenerative changes are common in old age, an X-ray neck Ap and lateral view is required.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
