Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Clicking Sound And Pain In Jaw While Opening The Mouth?
I bit into a frozen power bar with my right back molars on a cold hike 6 days ago and felt a sudden pop in the left side of my jaw. Every time I opened my mouth, I heard a clicking sound, but no pain. The next AM I had pain (5 out of 10 on the pain scale) every time I opened my mouth wide. Some pain (4 out of 10) when chewing hard food. Despite using cold lazer treatments on my left jaw twice daily since then, the discomfort continues. The clicking sound has gone away. It is possible I broke my jaw? Should I see a dentist, doctor or wait things out?
I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..
As per your complain it seems that due to biting on hard bar there has been traumatic injury to the jaw joint and there is a possibility that there is dislocation or injury to the articular disc that is present as a soft cushion between the two bony ends of the jaw joint.. It does not seems to have fractured as you are able to chew and move the jaw with little discomfort.. I would suggest you to consult an Oral Surgeon and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like full mouth x ray can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly.. s of now you can take anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen, take a soft diet and avoid excess mouth opening..
Hope this information helps..
Thanks and regards. Dr.Honey Nandwani Arora.
