What Causes Clogged Ears After Wearing Motion Sickness Patch?

I had a sever virus about 4 weeks ago and my physician had me take a z-pak. My left ear started to clog up. I could still hear, but it was like I was underwater. Two weeks ago I had my gall bladder removed and had a terrible reaction to the anesthesia - terrible vomiting. I have been wearing a motion sickness patch ever since and the ear is plugged in the morning but gradually gets better during the day. My doctor has me on prednisone, but it doesn t seem to be doing anything. I m female and 54 years old . . .any idea what could be causing this?

Hello,

The following are few causes of clogged ears:
1) Too much earwax in the Eustachian tube
2) Water in your ear
3) A change in altitude (you may have noticed problems when you fly)
4) Sinus infections
5) Middle ear infections
6) Allergies

In your case it's mostly due to sinus or middle ear infection. You need to consult an ENT surgeon for detailed examination and initiation of treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
