What Causes Cold, Excess Phlegm In The Throat And Breathing Difficulty?

my son went to dr yesterday because he was having a hard time breathing, they listened to his lungs, check his nose and throat and ears. said it was a cold with the phlem that hangs in the back of the throat. he seems to get worse in the evening, he takes a hot shower and mucinex, but is scared to eat anything because he says it might not go down, so he threw up his mucinex. they gave him an inhaler to take, my question is... is there anything else that we can do to make him comfortable or is this more than the common cold or virus?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The doctor already checked and said it's cold. So no other serious bacterial infection like pneumonia, etc.

Now, he is very congested, especially nose.
The most important think is to ease his breathing:
- aerosoltherapy can help
- apply vapour rub on chest and back at bedtime
- use nasal decongestant to relieve nasal airways
- take antihistamines
- increase fluids intake especially tea, water with oral rehydration salt, etc.
- raise his head from shoulders when laying down
- gargle with warm water and salt; use oral antiseptic

It will get better in a few days. If not, should recheck with his doctor.

Wish fast recovery.
