What Causes Cold Sores Inside The Cheeks?

Dear Dr. Samuel Greif, Yes, I ve had these cold sores on the sides both sides of my mouth for several months now. I ve tried every thing. I ve just started using nystatin today. So I m going too see if it makes a different. Other wise I m lost. I ve not gone to my Doctor as of yet because I thought it didn t it needed to be addressed but I get it does. What would you suggest Dr. Thank You Sincerely Marty Moody ( female)

Sorry to hear that you are having sores on the inside of your mouth. From the description it sounds like you have aphthous ulcers or canker sores inside your mouth. We do not know what causes these ulceration but they do cause pain and can be triggered by certain foods and stress. In my practice I have tried patients using a solution of 1/2 diphenhydramine and 1/2 Maalox. Swish and spit the mixture 4-6 times a day may help reduce the pain and aid healing. But no studies have shown medication to be affective in reducing the ulceration.
