What Causes Compulsive Hand Rubbing?

for the past few years I have been rubbing and pinching my hands. It has got to the point where I have dead skin all over my hands and at night time while I watch TV I rub them so hard that it s painful. over the last year I have managed to stop biting my nails. I have bitten them going on 33 years and I wonder if that has contributed to the hand rubbing. also when I first start to rub my hands it causes pain but in some way that pain feel good. is this ocd?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your hand rubbing and pinching is certainly a type of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Compulsions can give you temporary relief but in severe cases, an urge to perform such actions repeatedly can hamper your quality of life.

Please consult a psychiatrist who will assess your condition before starting treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Prabhash Verma, General & Family Physician
