What Causes Confusions And Hallucinations After Removal Of The Colon?
My 70 year old father just had his colon removed. They have him on Fentanyl 80 mg or whatever it is. He is having confusion and hallucinations. I am concerned. I spoke with his nurses and they will not lower his dose or take him off even though he has requested to be taken off. Should I be concerned??
General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, Thanks for the query. I understand your concern. with the major surgery your father has undergone.. severe pain is inevitable post operatively. Spicy or must have started with Fentanil 80.. to control it. Cofißion & hallucinations are normal side effects of the drug.. likely to be decreased after few days ... may be it would be withdrawn after healing & your father gets adjusted with the new condition. He needs to be looked after carefully till either of the cases. let him tàke rest/ accompanied by someone to help. . Must consult treating doctor if side effects aggravate /there is difficulty in breathing. Thanks.
