What Causes Congestion And Swelling In The Left Nostril?
It is my left side nose. During daily routine, my left side nose normally ok even though I feel it is little bit swollen. Problem is during when I lay down to sleep on the bed. Once I lay down on the bed and my head position is relatively flat position, I feel my left nose becomes swollen and eventually plugging off my left side nose. Then I cannot breathe thru my left side nose. While I am in sleep, I feel I breathe using only my right side nose and feel very uncomfortable. What should I do? Thanks

Hi,
It seems that blockage of nose is due to causes like nasal polyp, sinus congestion, etc. Nasal Polyp is over growth of soft tissue inside nostrils and hangs inside nostrils and is seen commonly in cases of chronic infections like Allergic Rhinitis, Chronic Sinusitis, Chronic cold or respiratory infections, Asthma, etc.
When it is small it does not generally causes any problem but when it is increased in size it can cause breathing obstruction due to obliterating the nasal passages. I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and nasal endoscopy.
You can be advised steroid nasal drops that will help in shrinkage of the polyp. In case if there is no resolution surgical removal of polyps can be done. If there is sinus congestion antibiotics, decongestant nasal sprays and steam inhalation can help.
For now better put pillows under the head to raise a little higher while lying down.
