What Causes Constant Ankle And Foot Edema After Taking Losartan?

I was on amlodipine for awhile, but switched to losartan due to a side affect ankle and foot edema. I still get swelling through the course of the day while on losartan: is this a side affect of losartan as well? I am a 58 year-old male weighing around 265 lbs. and being treated for mild hypertension. (Before medicine my BP was around 140 s/90) If I severely cut back on salt, eat low carb diet, hill climb religiously, and elevate my legs, I can alleviate much of the swelling.., all of which was never needed prior to medicating for hypertension about 2 years ago, as I never suffered edema at all. Thanks, Ernie

Hello,

Ankle edema is seen in >10% cases of amlodipine users. Losartan may also have edema as side effect but in rare cases only. Edema of lower limbs is also seen in conditions like varicose veins, prolonged sitting as in travelling, prolonged standing, congestive heart failure, chronic kidney disease, pulmonary artery hypertension, lymphatic obstruction in lower limbs and deep venous thrombosis.

In order to rule out above conditions, thorough clinical examination and the following tests are necessary such as ECG, 2D echo, kidney function tests like serum creatinine and blood urea, liver function tests and hemoglobin. Kindly consult a physician for detailed clinical examination and appropriate treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
