What Causes Constant Cough With Shortness Of Breath In An Elderly Person?

When talking, my mother coughs and has shortness of breath. They did a pulmonary function test and she does not have much lung function. A nebulizer doesn t help. She does have severe spinal curvature that has gotten worse. Could this have something to do with it? She is in her 90s and otherwise in good health.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Problems with the spine shape can affect the lung function because it may affect the expansion of the lungs and cause volumes of the lungs to be reduced. In this case generally the medications are not much of a help.
She may be may benefit from some lung exercises to help her breathing muscles be strong and assist her better with the breathing. A physiotherapist might assist with this.

I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
