What Causes Constant Drowsiness And Tiredness While On Medication For Diabetes?
I am a male age 69 I am extremely sleepy, no energy almost to the point of feeling exhausted when I am awake; this has been going on for about 2 months I am diabetic in 2009 I had Leukemia my medications are: baby asprin , 1 daily; Glipizide 2 daily; Ferrous Sulfate 2 daily; Pioglitazone 1 daily; Simvastatin 1 daily; Metformin 2 daily; Lisinopril 1 daily.
Pioglitazone is most likely the cause of your fatigue and tiredness. This is a great medication for 'Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes' but it does the more common side effect of tiredness and even drowsiness. Metformin also can cause this to a lesser degree but it is far less common that the Pioglitazone. There aren't really too many options to alleviate the fatigue that I am aware of. Most patients that have complained of this, state that it does get better with time though.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. David Girardi, Internal Medicine Specialist
