What Causes Constant Pain In The Left Arm?

Yes, my boyfriend recently has developed a constant pain in his left arm - elbow don t the forearm. It seems to constantly bother him now but it started one day with sudden extreme pain starting t the elbow like he had bumped it and fractured or bruised the bone there. For the next few days, and onto weeks now it has really concerned me since the pain doesn t seem to be subsiding and starting today he is very lethargic, can barely move most of the day, his voice has weekend, he has chills, can hardly stay awake. He also has had a constant headache that seemed to lighten up when I !assaged his neck, but now it seems the most pain is down lower in his back mainly on the right side. A bit more about the arm injury or condition , as the days went on he had quite a bit of swelling and seemed to be filling with possibly fluid? Some friends thought maybe celulitus, others thought a spider bite, possibly brown recluse, but there didn t really seem to be a original site where he was bitten - he had what I originally thought might be a single, unrelated tiny break in the skin that had scabbed over before any symptoms started to show. His forearm had gotten very warm and swollen for a few days and eventually his skin started pealing at the elbow and some at his forearm. A friend gave him some antibiotics to take, clyndomiacin ( sorry not Sir on spelling) which he took or about 2 weeks but didn t seem to be helping much in !my opinion. There was no getting him to the doctor but now o am afraid his system may be compromised in one way and may be in more danger than he realizes. Another note, he has also just completed a 12 week treatment for Hep c which his Last blood test results indicated no presence of this virus at week 10 - he has a follow up blood draw again t the end of June to be sure he is cured for certain. Another complication that worries me is he has sclerosis of the Iiver, although his doctor didn t seem to be too terribly concerned about his liver function his last round of tests - I m afraid he has been drinking again, more than I agree with, but again, there s no stopping him when he decides he wants to do something. He says he s going to stop drinking again and work on drinking more liquids, especially water, which we are both terrible about. One last thing that seems to be an issue underlying is his nerves seem tweaked...quite a bit of involuntary jerking, restless ticks and jolting him awake at times. Jerking his arm or arms, his head, his back some, and even his legs I think as well. Which makes me think of toxcitity, I m not sure why, it just seems to be related somehow. So that s about it. I don t know if I should take him onto the er or if I am overreacting. I personally feel its better to be safe than sorry - especially since he is having so many various extreme symptoms, and he is o very lethargic and week today. Amy input would help a great deal. I don t like feeling like I m not doing anything actively to help his current condition. Its important to me that I take the best care with him that I can...he has children, all grown up of course, and many friends that care about him deeply, and the state of his condition is important to all of them - myself included. Again, any insight would be greatly appreciated and taken into serious thought

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Consult an orthopaedician and get evaluated. It may not be related to a spider bite.

As a first line management, he can take analgesics like Tramadol for pain relief. An MRI scan can be taken to rule out bone and muscle involvement.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
