What Causes Constant Sleepiness While On Levothyroxine?
My daughter (24) is taking Levothyroxine for an underactive thyroid. It is making her very sleepy and she s afraid of falling asleep at the wheel. There are other medications she is taking (Sertraline, minocycline and Apri for birth control. Can she stop taking the thyroid medication at once? Could the dosage be incorrect? I don t want her to continue to take a drug that is putting her in danger.
I can understand your concern. The sleepiness your daughter is experiencing is not a side effect of Levothyroxine. People take this medicine for years without experiencing side effect of this kind.
However, the medicine Sertaline that she is taking probably for depression, anxiety or premenstrual mood changes, does have the capacity to cause excessive drowsiness and sleepiness in a person taking it.
I would advise you to consult the psychiatrist whi has prescribed this medication as dose reduction of this medicine or molecule change may be needed.
I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic for your concern. Let me know if you have any follow up questions.
Best, Dr. Viraj Shah
