What Causes Constant Swelling In Right Testicle?

My age is 83 and my right testicle has been very swollen for several months. Both my primary care physician and I were relatively certain I had an inguinal hernia. I recently had a sonogram of the area and the initial diagnosis (apparently by the radiologist) was a hydrocele. What is that and is that at all likely at my age?
