What Causes Continuous Headaches?

Hi I am wondering if you would have any ideas of why my husband 54 year old,has had a continual headache since march 4th of 2017. He has had multiple MRI s and lumbar puncture and nothing is coming up also numerous lab tests all come back negative.they are gradually getting better in the last 5 months ,he has actually been able to work most days now . (This is a healthy man who would never take a sick day in his life . )

Hello,

Believe it or not, there is a new classification of headaches known as NEW DAILY PERSISTENT HEADACHE (NDPH).

We believe it is more common than realized, however, it is probably highly underdiagnosed.

It is characterized by people who are in their 50's, generally male, and virtually all patients can point EXACTLY to the month, date, and year (sometimes the hour) at which these unremitting, continuous headaches which can be terrible or just moderate, or even mild.

But they are CONTINUOUS, DAILY, and tend not to respond to any particular medication.

They are very difficult to treat since we don't know their mechanism. They are NOT MIGRAINES but can have symptoms mimicking migraine headaches.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Dariush Saghafi, Neurologist
