What Causes Cough And Increased Body Temperature?

My 17 y/o daughter developed a cough 2 weeks ago. Seems that she is constantly coughing. Today when she arrived home from school she said she had been hot since noon. I felt of her skin and it was clammy. Checked her temp and she was only 98. Saw doctor this past Saturday and he prescribed an inhaler and tessalon perles Neither has suppressed the cough, plus we have tried multiple OTC products that are not phasing the cough. Headed back to doc tomorrow. Just searching for potential answers tonight. Thank you for any insight.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

After a cold has resolved, the cough can persist, this is called post viral cough.

If there is no history of a recent cold, then the other causes of persistent coughing would need to be considered e.g.
(1) due to post nasal drip- this is the most common reason for persistent coughing, 1/5 of persons are not aware of the cough itself. Treated with a nasal spray and decongestant (even if no nasal symptoms)
(2) reflux-need to determine if related, some persons do not have the typically reflux symptoms but present with coughing
(3) asthma
(4) non-asthmatic eosinophilic bronchitis- treated with a steroid inhaler.

When she is reassessed, one of these may be considered.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
