What Causes Cough And Wheezing After Inhaling Cigarette Smoke?
Just recently I have started having an allergic reaction to cigarette smoke, whether it is fresh or old. I can walk by where it has been smoked several hours ago and I start coughing and wheezing in less than 5 minutes. This has only been this quick in the last few months. I have just recently been given a prescription for Singulair and a rescue inhaler...neither are working, my PA says that my lungs are clear, so I assume that it is in my bronchial tubes?
Cough or wheezing after inhalation of cigarette or any type of smoke is commonly due to decreased oxygen supply to the blood due to bronchospasm caused by increased mucus secretion (allergic response) leading to shortness of breath.
You are suggested to stay away from smokes of any type & pollution to avoid chest pain due to low oxygen supply & injury & inflammation to the trachea, bronchioles or the lungs. Visit ER, get Blood tests, Bronchoscopy, X-Ray, CT done. Get treated at the earliest, your treatment will depend upon the severity of the diseases detected. Neglect may lead to complications like Asthma, COPD, Respiratory disease or lung cancer.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
