I was diagnosed with pnuemonia of a lower lobe on Saturday. After starting a five day antibiotic and inhaler, plus some mucinex and tylenol, I'm feeling much better (able to get out of bed and interact with the family). Last night I had to sleep sitting up because laying down for too long makes my lungs sound like they have pop rocks in them and I have nightmares of being choked. Now I'm having severe coughing bouts that are returning blood tinged sputum and small pcs of what appears to be a tissue like substance (not mucus). Should I be concerned or is this just part of the healing process? My doctor doesn't have an on call service and I'm a little scared to be seeing blood, but I don't want to drag my kids out at night to go with me to the local ER for nothing.
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic. I can understand your concern. You are having hemoptysis (blood in sputum). And honesty speaking, it is not good sign. In my opinion, you should definitely go to emergency room and get done clinical examination of respiratory system and chest x ray to rule out worsening of pneumonia. You may need higher antibiotics and other supportive drugs. Don't wait at home, start treatment as early as possible. Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
