What Causes Cough With Brown Phlegm In The Throat?

I have cough and I occasionally bring up brown colored mucous. Every year or so I typically get bronchitis and this is how it starts. It will progress to more of a greenish mucous, upper respiratory and nasal congestion and or drainage, and related symptoms. I often end up on an antibiotic. Is there any recommended course of action at this stage?

Hi,

Brown cough is not good. This means there is inflammation with most likely erosion of the mucosa causing minor bleeding this brown cough. This is not uncommon in bronchitis. Yes. antibiotics are important to control cough and any superimposed infection.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mutuma Geoffrey Zambezi
