My dad coughs up lots of blood at night when lying down. The blood also comes out of his nose at the same time.He has just had a scan for lung cancer and the results are negative. My dad also finds it hard to swallow. He is now waiting for a endoscopy. He also has 2 hernias. My dad is 76 and has had a liver transplant 15 years ago. He also falls asleep without knowing during the day. It could be anywhere. The coughing up lots of blood at night has been ongoing every night for 2 months.I would appreciate any information you could give me as to what could be causing this.
Hello, Welcome to HCM. I understand your concern. Most likely causes for blood vomit in your dad's case are gastric varices (dilated veins at the lower end of food pipe) or peptic ulcer. Peptic ulcer is less likely in absence of burning abdominal pain. Your dad is having history of liver transplant and complaint of excessive drowsiness. Gastric varies along with excessive drowsiness may be a sign of failing liver. You have told that you have a endoscopy appointment which is good and very necessary in this case. Gastric varices can be treated by ligation during endoscopy itself. Hope this will be helpful. Do ask if any further question is there. Take care.
Hello and welcome to HCM, Coughing up of blood can be due to lesion in the lung or lesion in the throat. The lungs have been examined for any evidence of any suspicious lesion and no lesion has been detected in the lungs. Thus, examination of the throat region is required to look for any lesion in the throat. Difficulty in swallowing can also be associated with some lesion in the throat. Thus, examination of the throat is required to look for any suspicious lesion and thus treatment.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
