What Causes Coughing Up Of Blood?
64 y.o male pt with long h/o of coughing which had gotten worst in the last 2 weeks with small amount of blood coughed up in the last few days but exact qty and consistency of the blood not known. He now has fever which might suggest infection which I a scared that his lungs might have infection.... I will take him for CXR today to further enlighten his diagnosis. Would like you opinion pls

Cough from long duration .
Now from last two weeks cough associated with sputum and blood in it.
Fever also present .
Old age patient .
All these symptoms may be due to these possibilities , these include.
1 Tuberculosis , as this is most common cause of cough with blood in phlegm or sputum with fever . Diagnosis can be confirmed by X ray chest , blood for C B C , E S R ( if very high i.e.> 90 mm of 1st hour clearly suggestive of tuberculosis with these symptoms )Tuberculin test also help.
2 The next reason of such symptoms may be due to bronchiectasis . Get in X ray , blood for C B C & E S R . Copious amount of expectoration present in bronchiectasis.
3 Cancer as this is one of the most common reason of hemoptysis , if cough is from long duration . Diagnosis can be confirmed by M R I of lungs .
However there are so many other reasons of such symptoms as mitral stenosis , bleeding disorder , sore throat ( forceful cough ).
So consult a pulmonologist and get his opinion as mentioned above.
