Ive had sort of a stiff neck along with throbbing in the back of my head for two days, yesterday I coughed up some mucus it was hard in some part and im pretty sure there was blood in it. Today the pain lessened but when i stood up my head would hurt. I coughed up mucus again and there was as much blood, speckled, what could this be?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history of stiff neck along with throbbing in the back of head, blood stained mucous on coughing up.
Blood stained mucous can be due to severe respiratory tract infection along with severe inflammation.
Tuberculosis, granuloma, tuberculosis should be ruled out in all case after an ENT Endoscopy to see whether there is any cause in throat or nose like inflammation.
This in turn can cause stiff neck and headache as you have mentioned.
I would advise you the following in such a situation"
Consult your Doctor for primary examination and get started with proper antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and such medications as needed.
Request for further investigations and referral to the Specialist if your Primary thinks to.
X-ray chest to see for any lung lesion, X-ray of the cervical spine to see for cervical vertebrae problems like cervical spondilitis, slipped disc and go for confirmatory MRI of cervical spine if indicated.
Once the cause of blood in phlegm is identified then it would be easy to have guided and proper management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
