What Causes Coughing Up Of Gel Like Phlegm?

I ... once in awhile will cough up the odd time, ( usually one, and very very small ) gel-like clear translucent ball ( size of a very small pea ) with what appears to be tiny clear air bubbles inside. When I spit it into a Kleenex and squeeze, these tiny bubbles pop! There is no blood or black dots, they are completely clear. Happens maybe once or twice a week ... Sometimes less. I don t have a sore throat, I ve never smoked ... nor do I have any known respiratory problems. I do have heartburn though, but take a daily pill for it. What are these strange little balls, and where are theyy coming from?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The secretions you describe, as long as they are clear and contain no blood, are very likely nothing to worry. They may come from the sinuses or from the lungs.
On the other hand, it might be safer to just have a routine check with your doctor, this also depends on your age. If you are 40 years of age or older it might be even more important that you see your doctor and have a general check and examination of your lungs.

I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General and Family Physician
