What Causes Coughing Up Of Green Phlegm?

My husband has a cold, or possibly a sinus infection. We just got back from a 15 day cruise, flying back home a total of 12 hours. He is coughing up phlegm (greenish color) and and feels weak. No other symptoms are present. He believes he has a sinus infection and I do not agree since he is not having any sinus pain. He is taking Mucinux, maximum strength, expectorant. He seems to have gotten better. Do you think it is a sinus infection?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Based on the description, it appears that your husband is having sinus infection as green phlegm indicates it to be. Only taking Mucinex will not relieve the problem completely.
Kindly ask him to do the following to overcome it.
1. Do salt water gargling twice daily.
2. Take a course of oral antibiotics like Tablet. Azithromycin once a day for 3 days.
3. Use medicated lozenges for throat soothening.
4. Take steam inhalation regularly, which will help to keep the sinus and air passages open.
5. Avoid consumption of cold items like cool drinks and ice-creams.
Gradually, he should be able to overcome such problems.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best and wish him good health.
Regards,
Dr.Ashakiran.S.
