Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Coughing, Which Increases While Inhaling Or When Lying On The Sides?
Something is causing me to cough. It feels like something is in my throat or wind pipe. A doctor but a light down my throat and said he did not see anything; however, I feel it. when I lay on my side I feel it more and cough more. when I inhale i feel it and begin to cough. I can feel it any time of the day or night. and sometime I do not feel it at all. what is it or what could it be the problem.
You might be having postnasal drip which is the passage of the secretions from the back of the nose to the back of the throat and causing local symptoms in the throat. To some extent this happens to every one but in some patients it is more and causes them to be sensitive to it with worsening cough. You may try some nasal decongestants with pseudoephedrine for a few days (not more than 5 days) and see if it helps with the symptoms.
Another possible cause is GERD which is reflux of the acids from the stomach to the throat. In this case Omeprazole 20 mg 2 pills a day might be of help.
If no improvement with these two drugs in a few days or any worsening you will need to see your doctor.
I hope I have answered to your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
