What Causes Cramps In Calf Muscles?

My son has recently had a fever of about 100.5 and now is complaining of cramps in his calf muscles. He can t walk without crying. The doctor said the fever was a virus and we were told he just had to fight it off. Now these leg cramps have come up. I am very worried.

Hi,
Welcome to HCM!

First of all, I'd like to reassure you not to worry. Cramps occur in the body due to dehydration (commonest cause). We tend to decrease our fluid and water intake when we are ill. This dehydration causes muscle cramps. All your son has to do is drink lots of water or oral rehydration solutions.

Also, if I were your treating doctor, I'd advise to investigate serum potassium level in your son as potassium abnormality is another common cause.

Hope this information helps .Feel free to ask if you have any doubt.

Wish your son a speedy recovery.
With regards,
Dr. Sridhar
